AHMEDABAD: Shweta Bhatt, wife of suspended IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt who would take on Narendra Modi from the Maninagar assembly seat, launched a national campaign to free her husband, who she alleged was targeted by the Modi government for alleging the CM's complicity in the 2002 riots.
Sanjiv Bhatt had told the Supreme Court last year that Modi was complicit in the 2002 riots. He also deposed against him before the Nanavati Commission set up to probe the riots. Bhatt, who was principal, State Reserve Police Training School in Junagadh, was later suspended by the government.
Shweta's campaign won support across sections: from Bollywood actors to college students in Allahabad. Social networking sites were full with blogs and campaigns supporting her.
"I was scared and cried for the first night after he was arrested. I had two options: to sit at home and pray for his release or tell world about the injustice. I chose the latter," Shweta later said.
Modi, on the other hand, took on bete noire Keshubhai Patel and Sonia Gandhi's political advisor Ahmed Patel. He harped on the incident in which a 12-year-old child reportedly snatched away the Congress candidate's nomination paper in Visavadar, the constituency Keshubhai is contesting from.
"Recently, the Congress supporters were seen crying because the child snatched away a Congress candidate's papers. In a state where a child is so wise, people are set to snatch way Congress's mandate for good. Congress doesn't dare say there is fixing (between them and Keshubhai's party, GPP)," he said.
"Congress is unable to find anyone other than Ahmed Patel... it lacks leaders," Modi said, adding, "In the last four days, no Congress leader has been seen. Even their party workers are trying to locate them."
Reacting to the jibe, Gujarat Congress said Modi is hungry for power. Describing him as 'Khursidas', state Congress chief Arjun Modhwadia said, "Modi only dreams of the chair. Ahmed Patel has never asked for CM's post in the past and never will."
